In Japanese history, between 1639 to 1858 Japan was isolated from the rest of the world. So Japan always fallen behind in terms of technology and modernization. The Meiji restoration was all about when the Japanese people got in touch with the outside world and the western country's technology.around 1868 to 1912.
Matthew Perry was a leader in the ships that came to Japan. the American ships needed many supplies, so they wanted to trade in Japanese ports. The Americans brought a lot of heavy ships, guns and cannons etc. The Japanese were scared of the technology and how they were staying behind, and they did not have any power at all. So the Japanese signed the treaty of Kanagawa, which allows the America to enter two ports in japan. After that the Japanese became modernized and thought that they needed to adapt the technology of the western civilization. The Meiji restoration is the adaptation of technology and how Japan became modernize.
